Good causes get Social

Hey small businesses, take a look at what the NFP sector are doing and how they are using social media to promote their brand, leverage interest with their “customer” and creating something FAD (Funny, Awesome, Different) to cut through the noise.

The Daffodil Foundation is holding its annual fundraising event in August to braise much needed funds for the Cancer Council of Australia. Their major sponsors Sorbent have come up with a great campaign which involves members of the public uploading a video of themselves to YouTube singing the 80′s classic “I’m walking on sunshine” For each video uploaded, Sorbent will donate $10 to the Cancer Council. Over 600 videos have been uploaded and the travelling “Sorbent Singing Pod” will continue to offer people the opportunity to access the technology to do so in public areas in major cities.

We love this totally “sharable” innovative approach to fundraising and hope to see more of it. To find out more visit Sorbent Daffodil Day and start tuning up those voices!

Here is what the Cancer Council does and why you should support their fundraising efforts on the 25th August:

  • Daffodil Day 2011 is Friday 26th August
  • This year Daffodil Day celebrates its 25th Anniversary in Australia
  • Website URL: www.daffodilday.com.au
  • Info line: 1300 65 65 85
  • Daffodil Day is for all of us to give hope for a brighter, cancer-free future
  • The largest national fundraising event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, Daffodil Day raises essential funds for cancer research, prevention and support services
  • The daffodil is the international symbol of hope for all touched by cancer
  • This year Daffodil Day aims to raise over $9.5 million to fund the cancer control initiatives, patient support and research services of Cancer Council’s eight state and territory member organisations
  • More than 10,000 volunteers are expected to staff over 1,200 Daffodil Day sites across Australia

App Design Contest

Are you an App designer? Do you like the sound of going into the draw to win 5000 Euro (yes, well, we know its not as much as it used to be, but it’s certainly noting to sneeze at)

Our friends over at WYTSC (WORLD YOUTH STUDENT CONFERENCE) have sent us the details of their new competition which is all about Apps. We love their innovative approach, shaking up the youth travel industry (because despite being early adopters in
e ecommerce they aren’t exactly leading the way in mobile)

Check out the website here for more info.

For travel/tourism operators wanting to further expand their networks and knowledge base of the youth travel industry, we recommend registering for the annual WYSTC event (to be held in Barcelona this year) Its a 3 day jam packed event of buying/selling and learning. Social Media; a launching pad for Australia’s brightest

Parents who preach homework before Facebook, be warned.  And for those who think opportunities in the music industry happen for just the lucky, pay attention.  A brand, best known for giving you wings, has revolutionised social media for aspiring musos and their support networks.

The Red Bull Bedroom Jam is a global initiative that encourages young people (aged 14 to 19 years) in bands, to pick up their instruments, write original material and mobilise their fans, friends and family via social media channels.

How it works is that bands create a profile on the Red Bull Bedroom Jam website, (www.redbullbedroomjam.com.au) then bring across their social networks, including Facebook. Youtube, MySpace, SoundCloud and Twitter.

While talent is paramount, social media savvy is the factor that secures the band the ultimate leg-up.

The musicians who generate the most “buzz” via social media channels (as tracked on the Bedroom Jam Buzz Chart) are awarded the chance to stream a live performance from their bedroom to the world and, ultimately, host a gig in their backyard.  It’s a proven format; with Melbourne Pop-punk band Way with Words winning the first Australian Bedroom Jam competition.

The strategy is a clever one; providing aspiring bands with the opportunity and platform to promote their music through pre-existing networks, connecting with music fans and wider audiences.  Through the Bedroom Jam competition, family and friends interact with their loved one’s work, equipped with the tools to directly impact the success of the band – an almost unprecedented campaign that uses social media to great success.

While the competition gives musicians the best opportunities based on social media connectivity, Red Bull, as creators and owners of the Bedroom Jam initiative, receive significant brand exposure – and recognition for being at the fore of Australian music.

The Red Bull Bedroom Jam is a fantastic example of social media at its best, with the initiative centred on social media capabilities and connectivity.

New facebook events functionality coming to an iPhone near you and 5 ways your small business can benefit

Facebook has announced that it will shortly roll out it’s new “events” functionality that will allow delegates to “check in” in a similar way to they currently use facebook places.

In some ways this is facebook’s equivalent of twitters hash tag (#) which is often used at events so that delegates can announce their attendance and also follow the news stream (think last weeks SXSW)
The new functionality will also allow users to tag friends who are also at the event.

The new functionality will be rolled out in the next iPhone application update and is currently being tested as we speak.

As a small business owner, you are probably sitting there thinking, great, but how can I benefit from this… well read on for out top 5 ways your business can benefit from the new Facebook events check in…

5 ways your small business can benefit from Facebook Events check in…

Facebook events will tag people as being at your business and appear in the news feeds of their friends. Consider how you can spread your reach with the following…

Create events around product launches (reach out to your existing data base)
Create an event around your annual sale. Hold a special “sale launch party to kick things off
Create “VIP” nights (works well for retail and some service businesses in the beauty service industry)
Do you host a regular event for a small group (ie mums, sporting teams etc?) make this your starting point
Offer those who check in an extra special incentive (ie discount, free gift, VIP seating)
